What Are The Top 10 Best Strength Exercises

Question: Coach what do you think are the best strength exercises to get optimally fit?

Well, I just recently got this email question from a reader and strength student on the blog. I’ve written about this before, but I thought it was worth covering here again. I suppose if you held a gun to my head and forced me to pick the best exercises to build optimal fitness I would go with this list.

10 Best Strength Exercises

So when it comes to strength exercises there may be 5 or so movements that get repeated with a lot of coaches, but as you start to grow certain lists you start to see where there are differences among professionals. Obviously I’m a huge believer in the fundamentals because if you’re incapable of performing basic foundational movement then you’re not going to get the results…period.

Granted with each strength movement the reality is that you can probably implement several variations of that movement so just keep that in mind. If I had to pick a top 10 for you then I believe this would be a solid selection for you to include into your programming.

  1. Barbell deadlift
  2. Barbell squat
  3. Barbell/dumbbell bench press
  4. Dumbbell rows
  5. Dumbbell/kettlebell presses
  6. Weighted pull-ups
  7. Kettlebell Turkish Get Up (TGU)
  8. Kettlebell swings
  9. Farmer’s carries
  10. Dumbbell/kettlebell snatches

Some honorable mentions…

  1. T-bar rows
  2. Weighted step ups
  3. Single arm single leg deadlift
  4. Goblet squats
  5. Sled pushes

Strength Exercises: The Takeaway

Look there’s not really a completely right or wrong answer here. I selected this list because this list has served me well for many years with both my own training, as well as the training of all of my students.

Do you use all of the strength exercises mentioned here in your own training?

Which one of these movements do you NOT currently use in your own training?
