Ok so most of the time I like to dish out informative training programs, lifting techniques, and workouts that I hope would make the likes of agent 007 proud to participate, but today I’m going to break away from the mold for a moment. This country (The U.S.) is fatter, lazier, and softer than ever. Thats right, I said it! Ole’ BR is going on a soapbox today!
Fat People In Fat Health Clubs…
This never ending battle over the truth about fitness involving “fad diets,” false promises,” and “horrible training practices,” has gotten this country into a big fat mess. Now I’ve talked at length about the health club industry on numerous occasions. I’ve been very quick to point out the lack of discipline, the improper use of free weights, and the sorriest excuse of group fitness classes these eyes have ever seen. People are uninformed, ignorant, and for the most part scared to break a sweat. No wonder there is a weight problem in this country and in the meantime the health club industry continues to rack up billions of dollars off of unused memberships.
I have been doing this long enough to recognized this problem. The funny thing about my profession is that “everybody thinks they are a trainer or fitness expert.” This mindset has always caused me to shake my head in disgust. I have to smile and grit my teeth to prevent myself from saying or doing something that I might regret. Now most of you that follow and know me recognize that I am an easy going and pretty nice guy, but even I have a limit and due to the recent build up of frustration I just felt like getting this off of my chest.
Why in the hell most folks think they are the fitness or strength and conditioning expert is beyond me. For some reason or another people will look to their automotive, computer, and even their exterminator experts for the advice they need. However, for some reason or another they can be staring death in the face with a mountain of health problems ranging from problematic joints, heart disease, diabetes, and God knows whatever else, yet they want to administer their opinion on how its done!
The problem with this is that the health clubs (to a large degree) cater to this soft mindset. If you are a club that doesn’t participate in this then you are excused. By enlarge though people see all the “bells and whistles” and that is what they think they should be paying for. This is the gap which causes most all of the problems my friends. You see it is not the equipment with all the “bells and whistles” that gets things done! Its the proper application of smart training that makes the world go round!
Everybody wants to look like the guy or girl on the cover of the Men’s and Women’s Health magazines, yet they don’t want to pay the price for it.
