The Role Of The Strength And Conditioning Coach In MMA...

Brock Lesnar by barthook

Unless you look and perform like the guy in the picture above then you need to understand the role of the strength and conditioning coach. Even if you do the Brock Lesnars of the world still had to be trained by somebody. A few things come to mind when I look at athletes such as Brock and others that I have had the fortunate opportunity to train and that is commitment, planning, and  performance. Let's face it, no matter the sport you compete in if you can outperform the other guy then you stand a greater chance of winning. I know I sound like Captain Obvious by saying that, but the point is that you can train, but do you train with purpose? To figure out which combo meal you've been ordering keep on reading.

MMA Core...Getting Down To The Core Essentials!

mma core, strength and conditioning programs

It has been a tremendous week. First of all, I just got back from Las Vegas. That's all I need to say about that. Now on to today's topic which involves the MMA core. It has been no secret that my involvement within the sport of MMA has been growing stronger over the past year or so. I mean I train all types of athletes, but the sport of MMA has been sort of dropped into my lap and I've got to tip my hat to God for helping me out with this one. It has been a great experience, but it has also been a rather surprising one in terms of the observations I have made through my strength coaching eyes. Just keep reading and you'll get where I'm going with this one!

Water is beautiful by Jonatan Östlund

I've got to admit that my MMA students and serious fitness personnel have really been kicking things up a notch lately. As you may or may not know I am the strength and conditioning coach for Team Octopus. This has been a great relationship and it has provided me with a platform so that I can really start to open up the ole BR strength and conditioning playbook! I owe a special thanks to the guys and girls that have joined and been consistently participating in the class. It really is starting to pick up a ton of steam! Great job everyone!

May The Force Of Your Core Be With You!

Darth Vader by snapper31

I've gotta say that Lord Vader was great at convincing others to get things done by leveraging the power of the force! However, I don't have that same luxury. Unfortunately I can't throw objects at defiant individuals without actually picking those objects up to do so! I haven't yet mastered the ability to wave my arm and magically have things fly from one end of the room to the other. Not that I would throw something at anyone, but if I had to I could depend on a different force to make it happen. Core strength is an essential trait even for Darth Vader my friend.

So you're standing in the ring and your opponent comes over to face off with you after the ref yells something like let's get it on or let's get after it! Your blood boils, your nervous, and all you can think about is knocking the guy out. You know you have one hell of a punch and maybe even a better kick so you unload on him when you have an opening. You land the shots, but he is still coming after you!  Now your thinking damn it did he even feel that? Now you know you've got to be prepared to go the distance just in case.

All Those Ballistic Moves Are Going To Injure You!

Muay Thai : Flying punch by Kulturang Ewan

All of those crazy ballistic movements can injure you that's why I don't do them! Whenever I hear this from folks I just shake my head and wonder where they get this from.  I don't know why people have in their minds that any form of movement based exercise is bad for them. Maybe it's because they are just looking for a reason NOT to do something that is obviously more challenging than their usual routine or maybe it's because their level of fitness is so poor that they are prone to injuries anyway. Either way if they aren't going to train in order to perform then they can't expect to perform in the first place.

Developing Work Capacity...The Path To Athletic Fitness!

CERTIFIED STRENGTH & CONDITIONING SPECIALIST by Leo Reynolds

Obtaining a level of athletic fitness in order to compete at the highest level requires both mental toughness and hard work.  A significant level of strength is important for you as an athlete, but having the ability to compete with intensity and without fatigue or failure is an absolute must if you expect to beat up your competition and finish out high fiving your teammates rather than walking away with your head hanging low.  To turn up the intensity you've got to be willing to turn up the intensity!

And You Thought Your Training For The Day Was Done?

Finish Line by RetailByRyan95

Whenever I watch a sporting event or game I do so from a different perspective than the average fan. I look at athletic competition from a strength and conditioning perspective. Too many times I have seen teams not "Finish the Drill" or guys get beat simply because they weren't physically prepared as well as their competition. There is a lot to be said for having the ability to OUTWORK your opponent.

Fast Hands, Stable Shoulders...A Recipe For Punching Power!

David by StephenCaissiePhoto

The art of athletic performance revolves around training your body to achieve certain traits. For instance, in the sport of MMA if you are wanting to master the art of throwing a punch then you've got to work on mastering the strength, speed, and power of the rest of your body. You can't throw a punch solely using the strength of your arm, therefore you have to train your body to master certain traits that will give you both fast hands, stable shoulders, and the ability of your body to be fluid during the act of throwing the punch.
