Strength Training Facts...Why I Don't Like The Leg Press!

dislike button by Sean MacEntee

Over the years I have always been more interested in building the legs by either squatting or deadlifting in my strength training program. Now some of you would argue that deadlifting is more for building "the back," and I would agree with you, but right here you're wrong and I'm right because I'm the one writing the post! Geez, I must be grumpy today. I'm just saying that I prefer these strength training tactics to the most epic fail in leg training history being that of the ole leg press. So why am I so set against this machine when talking about trying to metamorphosize from Joe Regular into the THIGH HULK. Well that's why I decided to tackle this in the following post. If you want to be the THIGH HULK then here's why you should scrap the leg press.

Out Train The Game...Fueling The Beatdown!

Punch to the Face by Ninja M.

Can you out train the game? One of my students wore a T-shirt the other night during one of my strength and conditioning sessions that read Out Train The Game! I loved the concept so I stole it so I could plaster it right on the title of this very blog post. Is this possible? Can one Out Train The Game? Well, just keep on reading and I'll continue to discuss the matter at hand.

BR Strength Training Theater Presents...Part 1

Alfred Hitchcock by bobo.keen

Alfred Hitchcock Logo-I'm Not That Rounded

Over Christmas I just got the Alfred Hitchcock DVD collection and it spurred an idea in me to come up with this particular blog series. So why Alfred Hitchcock? Because in my book he's cool, so just deal with it ok! Just keep reading and you'll see how I connect the dots.  You see one of the things that made Hitchcock so great was his ability to manipulate the mood of a scene or episode by using a particular camera angle that mimicked a person's gaze giving the viewer the feel of voyeurism. Because of his unique style of camera angles and editing he was also able to shift and manipulate the perception of the viewer by playing on and maximizing emotions such as fear, anxiety, and empathy. Today's Strength Training Theater intends on doing the same thing!

Lift Heavy Things And Be Innovative!

Arthur Saxon, "2 Hands Anyhow" by ollyht

This week one of my very good friends and retired Muay Thai fighting pro pulled his last set of deadlift at 345 for 5 powerful reps! Weighing in at a solid 165 lbs. this was a very impressive feat. After some yelling and grunting he had pulled the heavy load and set a PR without blowing an O ring or anything else for that matter! The deadlift is one tremendous lift for building solid total body strength, but the heavy lifting for him to hit this PR took consistent practice and some innovation.

From Old Generation Bodybuilder To The New Generation Bodybuilder!

Eugene Sandow-1890 by ADiamondFellFromTheSky

I am not personally a competing bodybuilder, but I do understand the elements behind what it takes to build muscular size and definition. I have managed to do it for both myself and many athletes and clients over the past 10 years. The thing is that the bodybuilders of yesteryear understood this better than anybody which is where a great deal of my influence for strength originated. I think many of the wannabe bodybuilders of today have either missed the mark on what it takes to build size or they just simply don't want to do what it takes to build the size they desire. Either way I'm going to dive into the possible reasons for this in the rest of this article. You don't want to miss this.

Happy Thanksgiving...Don't Get Too Fat And Slow...And Other News!

245/365 Slinky made a Thanksgiving Card :) by BarbaraCZ~in and out caused by computer problems

Taking this Thanksgiving holiday to a whole new level I just wanted to take a second to blast off on some holiday issues I have around here. Look it is too early to call me a scrooge and I'm definitely not one, but if you lived in Buford, Ga. (aka. The Mall Of Georgia) you would understand exactly where I'm coming from. Traffic is ridiculous and when this many people get together something dumb is likely to happen.

Rotate It...Become A Tornado Of Performance!

TazDon Spinning by TazDon

"If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves." - Thomas Edison

Just like Edison said in the quote above if we did all the things we are capable of doing we would absolutely be astounded. This is no different when it comes to programming within the confines of your strength and conditioning program! Remember how badass the Tazmanian Devil was growing up? The Tazmanian Devil was a tornado of performance. As far as I can remember he had no problems utilizing the power of rotational movement to get around and even enforce intimidation on both his peers and his competition! I think he even worried Bugs Bunny a bit whenever he started spinning out of control in the form of that saliva spitting tornado. Anyways, the bottom line is that if the Devil recognized the importance of this then maybe we should consider it for ourselves. That is the power of rotation, not the spitting part.
