Strength Training For Life...No Room For Crutches Here!

Crutches by Scoobyfoo

So the other day I had a couple of newbies start out with me during a beginner's strength and conditioning session. I had them performing the ever beloved functional wall squat or as I like to state the face the wall squat. Unlike most usual squatting drills when involving the wall most people face away from it. With the face the wall squat you are...yep you guessed it, facing the wall! The point of the drill is to enforce proper moving technique for the squat exercise. As I was using certain cues to touch on certain trigger points to help them refine their technique I noticed a back brace on one of the students. As it turned out both were wearing the same thing. To learn what happened next continue reading!

The Role Of The Strength And Conditioning Coach In MMA...

Brock Lesnar by barthook

Unless you look and perform like the guy in the picture above then you need to understand the role of the strength and conditioning coach. Even if you do the Brock Lesnars of the world still had to be trained by somebody. A few things come to mind when I look at athletes such as Brock and others that I have had the fortunate opportunity to train and that is commitment, planning, and  performance. Let's face it, no matter the sport you compete in if you can outperform the other guy then you stand a greater chance of winning. I know I sound like Captain Obvious by saying that, but the point is that you can train, but do you train with purpose? To figure out which combo meal you've been ordering keep on reading.

Vertical Jump Mastery...Why My MMA Fighter Can Out Jump Your Basketball Player!

Michael Jordan by Guitar Zero

I know the title of this post probably got your attention which is why I am going to get into the details of what all is involved in having some major "UPs" when it comes to the vertical jump. I am always amazed at how fixated young basketball players are on increasing their vertical jump. I know that Michael Jordan started it all with his leap from the free throw line in the slam dunk contest many years ago. I remember seeing that when I was kid and yes I was impressed just as much as any other teenager at the time. However, as I've gotten older and have developed an understanding of what builds on human performance I can tell you that I have seen some equally impressive vertical jumping from other athletes as well, namely MMA fighters!

Strength Training Facts...Why I Don't Like The Leg Press!

dislike button by Sean MacEntee

Over the years I have always been more interested in building the legs by either squatting or deadlifting in my strength training program. Now some of you would argue that deadlifting is more for building "the back," and I would agree with you, but right here you're wrong and I'm right because I'm the one writing the post! Geez, I must be grumpy today. I'm just saying that I prefer these strength training tactics to the most epic fail in leg training history being that of the ole leg press. So why am I so set against this machine when talking about trying to metamorphosize from Joe Regular into the THIGH HULK. Well that's why I decided to tackle this in the following post. If you want to be the THIGH HULK then here's why you should scrap the leg press.

Hulk Smashing Some Misconceptions On Strength Training For Women...

She-Hulk_#1_Blind_lady_Justice by Greeeeeeeeeeg So today I'm going to attempt to smash down some common themes and issues that tend to come up when involving strength training for women. You know the ones I'm talking about. Things like going above 5 lbs. will turn a lady into the She-Hulk, although I would argue the She-Hulk is hot to trot. I mean just look at the picture above! Ok, maybe She-Hulk was a bad example, but perhaps her male counterpart would've been the better comparison. Nevertheless, I'm going to look at some ways that I can help you ladies and the rest of you that might be interested to smash through these very misconceptions in a HULK style fashion! Read more

A Proud Strength Coach That Had Some Students BRING IT!

David & Goliath by artydesigns

This weekend one of my dedicated students placed number 2 in the NATION at the WKA nationals! Jet you are a champion my friend and I just wanted to take this opportunity to tip my cap to you Jeff, Mark, and Dan this week for being dedicated to the strength and conditioning workouts that I throw in front of you! Unfortunately I wasn't able to make the trip, but was keeping up with the play by play through facebook. It was my understanding that Jet (my student) was outsized by most of the competition, but that he pretty much decimated everyone in his path on his way to the championship bout. I would say that at the young age of 19 with a bit of experience he'll be in that number 1 spot in no time!

MMA Core...Getting Down To The Core Essentials!

mma core, strength and conditioning programs

It has been a tremendous week. First of all, I just got back from Las Vegas. That's all I need to say about that. Now on to today's topic which involves the MMA core. It has been no secret that my involvement within the sport of MMA has been growing stronger over the past year or so. I mean I train all types of athletes, but the sport of MMA has been sort of dropped into my lap and I've got to tip my hat to God for helping me out with this one. It has been a great experience, but it has also been a rather surprising one in terms of the observations I have made through my strength coaching eyes. Just keep reading and you'll get where I'm going with this one!

A Knight's Tale...Strength And Conditioning Recommendations For Sir Lancelot?

Knights of the Damned by redshift27

Call the squire and inform him that Sir BR is about to show his fellow knights a way to build on their already mean jousting skills! I was up late Saturday night (post Saturday Night Live), yeah that late! Anyways, I came across a very interesting show on the History channel called Full Metal Jousting. Yes, believe it or not it was about modern day Knights suiting up in armored gear,  jumping on horseback, and galloping towards one another at killer speeds while trying to plant a large stick (a lance) on the shoulder of their opponent to knock his ass off his horse! Crazy sport right? I sure thought so which is why I kept on watching. As a strength and conditioning coach I couldn't help but study their techniques and movements and try to come up with a sort of strength and conditioning assessment for the needs of the modern day Sir Lancelot!
