Out Train The Game...Fueling The Beatdown!

Punch to the Face by Ninja M.

Can you out train the game? One of my students wore a T-shirt the other night during one of my strength and conditioning sessions that read Out Train The Game! I loved the concept so I stole it so I could plaster it right on the title of this very blog post. Is this possible? Can one Out Train The Game? Well, just keep on reading and I'll continue to discuss the matter at hand.

What Can You Do To Out Train The Game?

You have got be smart, period. First of all, to answer the original question "Can an athlete out train the game?" Yes, he or she can to a point. Assuming the athlete is good at their sport in the first place with a smart strength and conditioning program they can certainly give themselves a significant advantage over the competition when it comes down to game time. Now if this is the case then what can you do to get that much needed edge?

Be Strong Be Amazing- KettleBells for Women

Let's first take a look at the role of the strength and conditioning professional. To use me as an example I like to read a ton of stuff, organize it, and stick it into a game plan that would benefit the athlete or athletes that I'm training for the purpose of giving them the greatest mental and physical advantage possible. Programming is a big part of what the strength and conditioning coach or professional has to do for the sake of allowing athletes to gain that highly sought after athletic edge!  Lifting a lot of heavy stuff is a big part of this, but there is usually a plan as to how lifting this heavy stuff can be done in some organizational pattern. Not to mention other factors such as conditioning, flexibility, and recovery have to be considered as well.

When looking how the strength and conditioning professional organizes all of this stuff we want to identify how the strength coach (In this example, Me) identifies the different training tools that are involved. You see I have a lot of tools at my disposal. As you know one of my favorites is utilizing the role of the kettlebell or bells in the middle of all of this in some way. This is certainly no secret, but I also love the use of medicine balls, dumbbells, barbells, weighted vests, etc. The fact is that I have many modalities that I like to call on for different purposes. It's like I get to be some sort of strength coach superhero...kinda like Batman because I get to pull a different weapon out of my tool belt nearly every training session!

Training Modalities To Fit The Cause...

When it comes to picking out which training modalities (strength training exercises) to use for the purpose of improving performance I first have to diagnose the need. The tools have to fit the cause if you know what I mean. In other words I'm not going to use a 10 mile bicycle ride to condition a football player. That would be Jack Tardish and none of us want to be labeled that way. Instead certain modalities have to fit the cause because it needs to be athletic specific in nature. For instance, even smartly executed medicine ball drills would apply to nearly every feat of athletic conditioning. From building core strength, mobility, and developing on work capacity this would apply to MMA, football, basketball, hockey, etc. Check out some of my past victims...

The rotational nature of this med ball drill is great for all the reasons I just mentioned. Not to leave out the fact that after performing around 10 slams of this on each side while included in some sadistic circuit will make you want to punch someone in the face, preferably your competition. You see, now we're fueling the beatdown! It's all about being specific to the need my friend.

All in all, if you want to Out Train The Game you've got to identify the tools you need in order to make it happen. When you couple this along with how to actually use these tools then you will be well on your way to beating up on the other guy or girl either on the field of play or in the ring depending on what sport you compete in. Even if you are just serious about your personal level of fitness you are probably still goal driven which is why this is another reason why you need to think in the same way in terms of your programming.
